Since 1896 I have studied my own dreams, writing down the most interesting in my diary. In 1898 I began to keep a separate account for a particular kind of dream which seemed to me the most important, and I have continued it up to this day. Altogether I collected about 500 dreams, of which 352 are the particular kind just mentioned. This material may form the basis of what I hope may become a scientific structure of some value, if leisure and strength to build it up carefully do not fail me. In the meantime, with a pardonable anxiety lest the ideas should not find expression in time, I condensed them into a work of art--a novel called The Bride of Dreams. The fictitious form enabled me to deal freely with delicate matters, and had also the advantage that it expressed rather unusual ideas in a less aggressive way--esoterically, so to speak. Yet I want to express these ideas also in a form that will appeal more directly to the scientific mind, and I know I cannot find a better audience for this purpose than the members of the Society for Psychical Research, who are accustomed to treat investigations and ideas of an unusual sort in a broad-minded and yet critical spirit.

This novel makes frequent use of dreams as an interesting literary device. It also has beautiful descriptions. The main character has a dream wife in his dreams and a different wife in his waking life, but it's the dream wife he truly loves. The book is very old fashioned, so this aspect may not appeal to you.

This translation of 'De nachtbruid De gedenkschriften van Vico Mauralto' was first published in 1909 in Dutch and was translated by Mellie von Auw into English. This book is now in the public domain. The printed version has 259 pages.

Willem Frederik van Eeden was born in 1860 and died in 1932. He was a writer and psychiatrist who was also interested in politics and Indian philosophy; he translated Tagore's Gitanjali into Dutch. His interest in the psyche of people (why do they do what they do?) shows not only in his choice of job as a psychiatrist but also in his literary works. This 'The Bride of Dreams' is not well known, but worth your time if you like reading older literature.

I copy a paragraph from the first chapter to give you an idea of what this book is like below

[...]
The rumors regarding my past have all quieted down, and people have
grown accustomed to my foreign name - Muralto. They see me regularly
taking the same walk along the sea dike to my nursery, and my gray felt
hat and my white coat in summery weather are known as peculiarities of
the town. When you read this, reader, I shall be buried, respectably
and simply, with twelve hired mourners and the coach with black plumes
of the second class, and a wreath from the burgomaster's wife, to whom
I gave lessons; from the notary, who occasionally earned something
through me; and from the orphanage because, as treasurer, I always kept
the accounts in order.
